After trading Max Scherzer to the Texas Rangers, general manager Billy Eppler insisted the New York Mets are not tearing down their underachieving team.

"I do want to be clear that it's not a rebuild. It's not a fire sale," Eppler said Sunday at Citi Field. "It's not a liquidation."

The Chicago White Sox reinstated right-handed pitcher Mike Clevinger from the 15-day injured list Saturday and brought up two more right-handers from Triple-A Charlotte to restock their depleted pitching staff.

The Philadelphia Phillies designated Navy veteran Noah Song for assignment Saturday.

The 26-year-old right-handed pitcher was taken by the Phillies from Boston in the Rule 5 draft during the league's winter meetings in December with hopes he would play after completing his military service.

If Song clears waivers, Boston will have the option of taking him back to its organization.

The Rangers acquired right-hander Max Scherzer from the Mets in a Saturday trade, fortifying the Rangers' rotation for a World Series run as the dismantling of the disappointing Mets continues, sources familiar with the situation told ESPN, confirming multiple reports.

While a tentative deal was struck earlier in the day, it was contingent on Scherzer waiving a no-trade clause. One day after expressing frustration over the Mets' trade of closer David Robertson, Scherzer approved the deal to Texas, where he'll join the American League West-leading Rangers, who at 60-45 are one game ahead of the Astros.

In return, the Mets will receive Luisangel Acuna, 21, a middle infielder and center fielder who will likely be among New York's top prospects.

The Miami Marlins could use some offense ahead of the trade deadline and have interest in Tim Anderson, according to a report.

Anderson's contract with the Chicago White Sox carries a club option for 2024, otherwise he'll become a free agent.

Teams that have inquired with the Chicago White Sox about Dylan Cease have been told they don't want to trade the pitcher, according to a report.

Cease, 27, finished second in AL Cy Young voting last season and is under team control through 2025.

The White Sox traded Lucas Giolito to the Los Angeles Angels earlier this week.

The New York Yankees are looking to buy ahead of the trade deadline, but "important caveats" are present, according to a report.

The Yankees will face the American League East-leading Baltimore Orioles this weekend with Aaron Judge's return to the lineup imminent.

If they get swept by the Orioles and fall to five games or so back of a playoff berth, the Yankees are unlikely to buy.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have long coveted Nolan Arenado and "have engaged" with the St. Louis Cardinals about a possible trade, according to a report.

Arenado has a no-trade clause but is willing to waive it only for a trade to the Dodgers.

It's possible that a deal would include a starting pitcher such as Jordan Montgomery or Jack Flaherty.

Arenado is still owed $109 million through 2027, though the Colorado Rockies are paying $15 million of that from when they traded him to the Cardinals. 

The San Diego Padres aren't committed to selling, but they are listening to offers for Josh Hader, Blake Snell and Juan Soto, according to a report.

San Diego is more than six games out of a postseason berth in the National League.

Hader and Snell are pure rentals with both set to become free agents after the season.

Noah Syndergaard is hoping for a fresh start with the Cleveland Guardians.

The Guardians acquired Syndergaard from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for infielder Amed Rosario on Wednesday.

"There's been a lot of emotions with a balance between a lot of excitement and disappointment in myself," Syndergaard said. "My time with the Dodgers didn't really go as planned. I didn't really blossom into the pitcher I wanted to be, but maybe just a fresh start with the Guardians is really all I need to bounce back and just start fresh."

Syndergaard signed a one-year deal with the Dodgers before the season and posted a 7.16 ERA in 12 starts before being sidelined by a blister. 

He's expected to make his first start for the Guardians on Monday.
